High School Teen Draws Criticism for Wearing Pro-Life T-Shirt

Prosser, WA -- Andrea Lawyer's pro-life shirt didn't raise any eyebrows at
school for two years. But it soon could prompt a change in the Prosser
School District's dress code.

The black T-shirt with large block letters reads, "Abortion is Homicide"
on the front. On the back, it says, "You will not silence my message. You
will not mock my God. You will hear my cry and stop killing my
generation."

Lawyer, 15, a Prosser High School freshman, can wear the shirt to school,
at least until the last day of school on Wednesday.

"It's a strong message that she's saying. I don't think the message is the
issue. It's the degree of depth with which it's being presented; it's the
power of the statement," Principal George Holmgren said.

Questions from two high school staff members about the appropriateness of
the shirt sent Lawyer to the office a few weeks ago. She was asked to turn
the shirt inside out or face suspension.

Lawyer told Vice Principal Pat Ena she felt the shirt was appropriate
because it didn't promote sex, violence or drugs and it wasn't low-cut or
revealing. "I'm not like some person rampaging around. I'm a band geek,"
Lawyer said. She maintains a 3.7 grade-point average, plays flute in the
band, sings in choir and is active in pro-life activities.

"I'm against abortion. I'm Christian. My purpose wasn't to stir things up
but to find something to wear that day," she said.

"I don't see what this young lady did to be inappropriate," Superintendent
Ray Tolcacher said. "I think it's good discussion that can only be better
by surfacing those issues. We just want to fix (the dress code) so it's
clear. I don't want any kid to go through any anguish."

The district revises school policies regularly, and this summer the dress
code may be revised, Tolcacher said.

"We don't want kids in a gray area where we're leaving them open to get
into problems. We have kids that bring things to our attention all the
time. When those things happen, there's good reason for the discussion,"
Tolcacher said.

Lawyer said she doesn't want to break the rules but does want to be clear
on what the rules are. "I don't see a problem with the shirt until it's in
the dress code," Lawyer said.

The high school's dress code defines inappropriate attire as clothing that
promotes alcohol, drugs, tobacco or gangs as well as clothing that is
sexually suggestive or depicts lewd, obscene or offensive pictures or
slogans.

If the district decides to outlaw political statements on clothing, Lawyer
said she'll comply. "It's more like I'm going to laugh because they're so
close-minded. I don't even consider this rebellion. I was wearing a shirt
that wasn't forbidden," she said.

On Friday, Lawyer received flowers at school from a woman she's never met.
The card read, "What a brave person you are. I'm pleased to see a young
person such as you make a bold statement in this day and age when most
'don't like to make waves.' Stand up for what you believe in, especially
for the truth."

And people around Prosser have been supportive, said her mother Christy
Brooks. "I think she's done a good job of standing up for her moral and
political rights. It's an important issue to her," Brooks said.

And Tolcacher agreed.

"We want to open children's minds so they can be as objective as they can.
We can't offend people, yet we can't take away their right to say what
they want."

You know this is similar to the "straight pride" t-shirt that some boy got in trouble for wearing. I don't see anything offensive with either shirt and they should be allowed to wear them.

Great T Shirt!
Great point that life begins/exists at conception. The Bible indicates that the Physical realm is a representation of the spiritual realm. I think God gives spiritual life first then the physical is formed by God in the womb around the spirit life of a person.

Hebrews 12:9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.

We use our physical body to express our spiritual nature. If we didnt smile, talk, write, or interact in the physical realm others would not know how we feel. When our body through age, disease, or tragedy can no longer accurately represent our spiritual nature we suffer physical death and our spirit and soul depart our physical body and go directly into the presence of God.

The spirit of a person is created by God to last forever, the spirit lives on after the body has died and I think the spirit is alive before the body in the womb. Of course meaning that Abortion kills a fully viable living spiritual person. But also meaning that the body is dead but the spirit goes into the presence of God.

Well spoken, David. I believe the spirit is given at the moment of conception, and that there is never a time when abortion doesn't kill a true human being.
I'm going to try once more to attach the picture of the back of the T shirt.

Legal Center Defends High School Student's Pro-Life Shirt

Ann Arbor, Michigan -- The Thomas More Law Center has sent a demand letter
to school officials in upstate New York on behalf of a public high school
student who was ordered by school officials to remove her sweatshirt that
displays the words "Abortion is Homicide" on the front and the words "You
will not silence my message. You will not mock my God. You will stop
killing my generation." on the back.

The pro-life student had worn the sweatshirt on a number of occasions to
high school this school year without disrupting the workings of the school
and without interfering with the rights of other students. She had
received only positive comments from fellow students about the shirt.

On Friday, September 14, 2001, however, a school official told her that
she had to put on a different shirt or go home because the sweatshirt was
"offensive." The girl was placed in in-school suspension until her father
came to school. The girl, who was visibly upset over the matter, went
home rather than wear a different shirt to school that day.

According to Richard Thompson, the Thomas More Law Center's Chief Counsel,
"It is outrageous that the high school is attempting to silence this
girl's pro-life message, while other students are permitted to wear shirts
to that same school advertising beer companies and rock bands such as
Marilyn Manson. The only thing 'offensive' in this case is the school's
restriction of the girl's free speech rights."

The Thomas More Law Center's five-page letter explains the student's
clearly established constitutional right to wear her pro-life clothing and
demands that the school take immediate action and provide written
assurance that the girl will be permitted to wear her "Abortion is
Homicide" sweatshirt to school. Should the school disregard this demand
and continue to violate the student's rights, the Thomas More Law Center
is prepared to seek appropriate relief in federal court at no charge to
the girl and her family.

NY HS Student Now Allowed to Wear Pro-Life Shirt

Ann Arbor, Michigan - The Thomas More Law Center successfully intervened
on behalf of a student who was prevented by her public high school in
Malone, New York, from wearing a sweatshirt to school stating on the front
"Abortion is Homicide" and on the back "You will not silence my message.
You will not mock my God. You will stop killing my generation. Rock for
Life."

This past September, the student wore the sweatshirt to her high school
and was told by the school she had to wear a different shirt or go home
because the message on the sweatshirt was "offensive." The girl was
placed on in-school suspension until her father came to school. The girl,
who was visibly upset over the matter, went home rather than wear a
different shirt to school that day.

The girl and her family then contacted the Thomas More Law Center.
Edward L. White III, one of the Center's attorneys, sent a letter to the
Malone Central School District superintendent explaining in detail the
student's constitutional right to wear the pro-life sweatshirt, and
demanded written assurance that the school would no longer interfere with
the girl's right to wear her sweatshirt as well as a written apology to
the girl and her father.

The school district continued to prohibit the student from wearing her
sweatshirt citing a new reason, namely, that the sweatshirt conveyed a
religious message and constituted religious proselytizing. The school's
lawyer argued that a student may not proselytize a specific, religious
point of view in school, and the district could prohibit a student's
religious proselytizing just as the district can restrict a student's
promotion of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco slogans.

The school district, however, made a dramatic turn around after Mr. White
explained to officials that not only do court decisions contradict the
district's decision to stifle religious speech, but even the United States
Department of Education's guidelines, which every school district has
received, permits students to display religious messages on clothing to
the same extent that students are permitted to display other comparable
messages.

The school district gave written assurance to the Thomas More Law Center
that their client would be allowed to wear her pro-life sweatshirt to
school. In the same letter, the school district apologized to the student
and her father for any hardship caused to them as a result of the
incident.

According to White, "The school district did the right thing in
acknowledging our client's constitutional right to freely express her
pro-life views in school. Unfortunately, we receive many calls each
school year from public school students throughout the country whose
pro-life speech is wrongly prohibited or restricted by their schools.
Many of those students comply and stop wearing their pro-life shirts, even
though they don't have to. In this case, the student and family had the
courage to stand up for her rights, and I am pleased we were able to
quickly restore her right to wear her pro-life sweatshirt to school."
Mr. White went on to thank New York attorney John M. Kennedy, who assisted
the Thomas More Law Center with this case.

Canadian HS Student Suspended Over Pro-Life Shirt

St. Thomas, Ontario -- Lisa Klassen, an 11th grade student at Central
Elgin Collegiate in St Thomas, Ontario was given an "unofficial
suspension" for wearing a pro-life shirt. Klassen was sent home by
principal Ele Gibling who told the 16-year-old that some people found the
shirt offensive. The sweatshirt reads: "Abortion is Mean" and on the back
it says: "You will not silence my message; You will not mock my God; You
will stop killing my generation."

In an interview, Klassen was resolute in not caving in and has contacted a
lawyer from her church to defend her. "I feel so strongly that abortion
is wrong," she said explaining her motivation to bear the strain.
Klassen said she has been back to the school since her October 25
suspension - not wearing the shirt - and was warned that if she wore the
shirt again she would face increasingly long suspensions.

During her suspension some 50 students at the school held a protest at
which many wore shirts with the same pro-life message. She said that a
dress code which forbids offensive clothing is in place at the school but
is not enforced at the school and she has on numerous occasions seen
shirts that she, as a Christian, would find offensive.

A case over a similar shirt in Malone New York was resolved in recent
weeks after intervention by the Thomas More Law Center.

Indeed, Klassen's message has spread to the whole country as newspapers
from as far as New Brunswick have carried the story, and Klassen was
interviewed by the CBC in addition to extensive coverage in her local
newspaper. When she returned to class after her suspension, the editor of
the student newspaper asked her to write a short essay for the school
paper, but once written, it was not allowed to be printed even along side
an essay with an opposing view. However, the local paper published the
essay.

Principal Gibling refused to comment on the story and directed all media
calls to School Board Superintendent Lorayne Robertson. Robertson told
the Canadian Press, "In a public school, the focus is on learning and
what's happening in class. It's not a forum for promotion of a cause."

The Catholic Civil Rights League reacted to the news with disbelief.
Phil Horgan, a lawyer with the League said, "We would like to think that
subject to untrue, blasphemous or derogatory messages on shirts, those
which proclaim the truth are part of a vigorous discourse in the public."

Students Pro-Life T-shirt Is Equivalent to the Swastika Says School Principal; Thomas More Law Center Enters Fray

Students Pro-Life T-shirt Is Equivalent to the Swastika Says School Principal; Thomas More Law Center Enters Fray

ANN ARBOR, MI The mother of an honor student at Abington Junior High School in Pennsylvania was told by the principal that her sons pro-life t-shirt was unacceptable school clothing because its message was the equivalent of the swastika. The t-shirt displayed the messages, Abortion is Homicide. You will not silence my message. You will not mock my God. You will stop killing my generation. Rock for Life.

This past November, the principal told the student to either cover the shirt or turn the shirt inside out. After the student turned the shirt inside out, his mother contacted the principal and was told that the message was inappropriate to be displayed in school. He said the shirt and message were the equivalent of a swastika being displayed on a shirt, which the principal would not allow in school. The mother and son then contacted the Thomas More Law Center.

The Thomas More Law Centers Associate Counsel Edward White sent a four-page demand letter to school officials explaining the students clearly established constitutional right to wear his pro-life clothing and demanding that the school take immediate action to provide written assurance that he will be permitted to wear his pro-life shirt to school. The Law Center explained that the students speech did not cause any substantial and material disruptions to the workings of the school and that there was no legal basis on which to restrict his speech. The Law Center also noted that the mother and son have the option of seeking relief in federal court should the school not change its decision. The Law Center requested a response from the school officials by January 31, 2003.

School Backs Off Claim that Pro-life Message = Swastika;

Ban on Students Pro-Life Clothing Lifted

ANN ARBOR, MI The Thomas More Law Center declared victory today, after school officials at Abington Junior High School in Abington, Pennsylvania, abandoned their decision to censor a students pro-life message. The school principal had earlier ordered the students pro-life t-shirt turned inside out because it was equivalent to the display of a swastika.

Responding to a demand letter from the Law Center, attorneys for the school district agreed that the student has a First Amendment right to wear the pro-life shirt, and asked that the letter serve as written assurance of that fact. The t-shirt displayed the messages, Abortion is Homicide. You will not silence my message. You will not mock my God. You will stop killing my generation. Rock for Life.

Thomas More Law Center Attorneys had sent a four-page letter challenging the school policy, and demanded that the school take immediate action to provide written assurance that the student be permitted to wear the pro-life shirt to school. The Law Center explained that the students speech did not cause any substantial and material disruptions to the workings of the school and that there was no legal basis on which to restrict his speech.

Edward L White III, Associate Counsel with the Thomas More Law Center, commented, Too often public school officials forget that the First Amendment protects student pro-life messages. We are pleased that the school has quickly corrected its mistake and has acknowledged our clients First Amendment right to wear the pro-life t-shirt to school.

Really? Then why didn't it help the young man who wore a T-shirt stating: "Bush is a Terrorist and has 'murdered' thousands of my people in Iraq"??

Sure, it's an extremely sensitive and volitile subject, but then isn't is so with the pro-life/abortion issue?

The separation of School/State will continue to cross lines on both sides of every human issue. What offends one is acceptable if you yell loudly enough. What offends another is scurried under the carpet quickly lest it cause problems!?! We have a long way to go as a society, and even further as a spiritually enlightened species.

High School Recants, Virginia Teen Can Wear Pro-Life T-Shirt

by Steven Ertelt
LifeNews.com Editor
March 19, 2004

Newport News, VA (LifeNews.com) -- A Virginia high school has recanted in the face of a lawsuit filed by a pro-life firm that says it was wrong to prohibit a student from wearing his pro-life t-shirt. An assistant principal had told Denbigh High School student Daniel Goergen last month that he had to remove the sweatshirt or turn it inside out.

That prompted attorneys at the Michigan-based Thomas More Law Center to fire off a letter defending Goergen.

"I respected (her) opinion and did what she said because she's an administrator," Goergen told the Daily Press newspaper. "Then I got a lawyer to explain to her the right for me to wear it."

He said many students at the school have expressed their support.

In response to the Thomas More letter, Newport News Chief Deputy Attorney Leonard Wallin sent a letter informing Goergen's lawyers that he could wear the sweatshirt to school.

Wallin said that Goergen was within his rights to wear the shirt, but said school officials originally felt the shirt was disruptive.

"The fundamental question is whether or not wearing some garment with a message on it is going to create a disturbance, an immediate disturbance," Wallin told the Daily Press. "If there isn't a reasonable belief that it's going to create a disturbance (school officials) can't ban the message even if they turn out to be wrong after the fact."

The pro-life law firm asked the school to respond by today or it said it would file lawsuit in federal court to protect Goergen's rights.

Martin Goergen, Daniel's father, told the Daily Press that he was glad the school responded in time. He said his son had worn the shirt for two years without incident.

An assistant vice-principal had said the shirt violated the school's ban on profane or obscene language.

This is not the first time that a school has tried to silence a student's pro-life speech. Last April 28, students across the nation encountered pockets of resistance as they attempted to celebrate "National Pro-Life T-Shirt Day," according to the Law Center.

In New Hampshire, school officials threatened to suspend a high school freshman who wore an "abortion is homicide shirt." In Big Rapids, Michigan, a junior honor roll student was told to change her pro-life t-shirt or go home.

As a result of the center's intervention, the students in New Hampshire and Michigan were no longer harassed when wearing pro-life t-shirts.

Sure it does. When t-shirts with messages can not be restricted, then all those satanic and goth messages ARE going to show up as well. Where did you get the idea that it wouldn't?

<<<<It does open the door to rid this country of its current Culture of Death>>>>

Nope. This is a local decision in a school and have no bearing on the rest of this country. What it DOES do is open the door for t-shirst with messages that some people object to. That includes messages that Christians object to.

Where did you end up believing THAT to be a good idea?

<<<<No to Death!!
Yes to Life >>>>

By now, a teenager in that school will be allowed to wear a t-shirt saying the exact opposite.

The Message of Good and Life will always win out over the message of Death, Evil and Abortion because God is ultimately in control and He is Life, Love, Truth and Goodness.

Evil people do exist but we have no reason to fear them or their evil message even if it is on a profane t-shirt.

God Bless you,
David

Sure. But your claim was a denial of those t-shirts now being allowed in school. But I am glad that you have abandoned that claim.
